Nowadays Poetry Session, based at the Bat Centre, was formed in the early 2000’s by a group of Durban poetry Stalwarts for the purpose of meeting at least once a week, on Wednesdays to not only share their poetry among each other but also to discuss issues in and ideas about the world we live in and beyond. Years later, now with new blood, Nowadays is still going strong.
It is the oldest surviving poetry session in Durban and is open to everyone.
The future of Nowadays will never be the same. As of 2015, Nowadays embarked on a mission to expand its platform to more than just the Wednesday sessions, it dreams of being the hub of Durban poetry and as such has restructured its management to champion the journey ahead, has forged strong partnerships with prominent Art houses in Durban such as the Durban Music School, The Playhouse Company and many others in order to learn the business of arts.
In the beginning of 2016, Nowadays formed a critical partnership with Current State of Poetry to bring to Durban the CSP & Nowadays Open Slam and One on One Slam. With slam having been a long forgotten culture in Durban/KZN poetry, Nowadays saw this as a great opportunity to show the new breed of Durban poets how exciting and skill sharpening slam poetry would be for them.
Nowadays also hosts themed poetry shows at the Bat Centre from time to time to showcase Durban talent.
So the future plans for Nowadays are centred around developing the business of arts, particularly poetry to individually sustain career paths for artists and also for itself as an organisation.
